The Slovenian Canadian Club
Calgary Alberta
Nearly one thousand Slovenian people make their homes in Alberta
cities and about two hundred families live in the Calgary area.
The first significant number of settlers, who emigrated for
economic reasons, arrived between 1924 and 1930. Later immigrants
were the postwar political refugees.
The Slovenian Canadian Club of Calgary was organized in 1965.
Seventeen founding members elected Alojz Cipot as the first
president By 1970 the membership had increased to 150 and social
events were held to raise money for the purchase of a club building.
The grand opening of the Slovenian hall was celebrated in June,
1971, with a program of traditional entertainment. Monthly dances
and other social and cultural events are held regularly.
